* TYB Arts represents Maximiano Valdés worldwideWidely regarded as one of Latin America’s leading conductors, Maximiano Valdés trained at Rome’s Accademia di Santa Cecilia and won top honours at the Nikolai Malko and Vittorio Gui Competitions. Since 2008, he serves as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Puerto Rico and Artistic Director of Festival Casals in San Juan.
He was Music Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias for over 16 years and is now its Conductor Laureate. He has also led the Buffalo Philharmonic, Orquesta Euskadi, Orquesta Filarmónica de Santiago, and Orquesta Nacional de España.
Valdés has conducted major orchestras across North America, including Philadelphia, Toronto, St. Louis, Montreal, Baltimore, Seattle, Indianapolis, Houston, Santa Fe, and Dallas, and in Europe, ensembles such as Dresdner Philharmonie, Orchestre National de France, and Orquesta Sinfónica de España. In 2011, he performed with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican and in 2016 became one of the first international conductors to lead the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba. He maintains a deep relationship with Venezuela’s El Sistema.
Since his debut at La Fenice, Valdés has remained a powerful force on the international opera stage, with a repertoire spanning Mozart, Verdi, and Wagner, and a special focus on belcanto and French works, performing at the world’s leading houses, including Opéra de Paris, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Teatro Colón, Seattle Opera, and the Oslo Opera House.
His discography includes recordings with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, a series of Latin American and Spanish works with the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar for Naxos, and his most recent release featuring works by Roberto Sierra with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Puerto Rico. He was appointed Distinguished Professor at the University of Puerto Rico and holds an honorary doctorate.
This season, Valdés’ Werther received rave reviews, with critics across the board singling out his conducting of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Santiago as “eliciting a magnificent response from his musicians” and drawing “from the score all that was sensitive, all that was sensual … rightly earned him a standing ovation” (Visiones Críticas). Opera Actual also praised his “profound understanding of the French style: [with an] interpretation marked by clarity of the sound layers, control of the balance between voices and instruments, and the ability to make the music breathe, achieving that delicate and essential balance between transparency and emotional depth.”
Upcoming performances include conducting the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, leading the celebrated new force of Italy’s musical scene—the FVG Orchestra in Friuli-Venezia—returning to Teatro Cervantes in Malaga, leading the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra, and making his debut at Boston Symphony Hall.
