NIMROD BORENSTEIN
composer / conductor
Composer-conductor Nimrod Borenstein is one of the most extraordinary artists of his generation. Characterised by complexity, skilfulness, and melodiousness, his works are in constant demand and have premiered at prestigious venues worldwide, from the Royal Festival Hall in London to the Salle Gaveau in Paris, from Carnegie Hall in New York to Hong Kong City Hall. As one review stated: “Borenstein’s compositions, across the board, regardless of genre, are exceptionally brilliant, multicoloured, and cleverly constructed”
(Opus Klassiek).
Borenstein is a consecrated conductor and has several ongoing projects with orchestras in the UK, Spain, Finland, and Italy. Gramophone magazine noted that his conducting brought “vivid playing from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra,” while Opus Klassiek hailed him as “an inspired composer but also an inspiring conductor.”
His work has been performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Oxford Philharmonic, Israel Camerata , Ex Cathedra, Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, and Quartetto di Cremona.
“Amongst the most recorded of contemporary composers in the UK,” according to Gramophone, Borenstein’s works appear on many albums, with some, like Quasi una cadenza, boasting multiple recordings. Borenstein’s 2017 Chandos album of his violin concerto and orchestral works, conducted by frequent collaborator Vladimir Ashkenazy, was named BBC Music Magazine “Choice.” The five-star review proclaimed Borenstein “an exuberantly inventive composer,” while Diapason magazine acclaimed the work as “superbly written for the soloist.”
Borenstein’s ballet score Suspended received over 200 performances since its premiere in 2015 at Covent Garden, including notable appearances at the Edinburgh International Festival and Taipei Arts Festival. The score also launched the Berlin-based Solaire label.
In 2023, Borenstein released an album of his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 91, conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Somm Recordings). The disc was enthusiastically received by Gramophone magazine and praised as “deeply felt and exquisitely written” (Stuart Millson, The Quarterly Review). Borenstein’s most recent album includes twelve études and other piano works, recorded by Tra Nguyen (Grand Piano Naxos), and was described as “a breathtaking experience”
(Fanfare).
Borenstein revealed himself as a precocious composer at the tender age of six; at fifteen, he won the Cziffra Foundation competition. He later moved to London to pursue his studies as a violinist with Itzhak Rashkovsky at the Royal College of Music. He was awarded the highest scholarship from the Leverhulme Trust to study composition at the Royal Academy of Music, where he is now an Associate.
With over 100 compositions to his name, Borenstein’s catalogue spans orchestral and chamber music as well as vocal and solo instrumental pieces.
Upcoming performances include conducting the English Chamber Orchestra for the world premiere of his Shakespeare Songs, Op. 101. This work, together with his Concerto for mandolin and orchestra, Op. 97, and Concerto for oboe and orchestra, Op. 99, will be recorded by the ECO under his baton in 2025.
